Lucky 8

Deanna,

We had an amazing thing happen with our little pup and thought you might like to hear the story or to pass it on. Our little puppy we got from you guys saved the life of our 21 month old son...

We had spent the weekend at Gary and Stephs (my brother and sister in law in Smithers, BC) and got up Sunday morning to pack up and head back to Mom and Dad's. Brady wanted to go and have a nap so we put him in his play pen, on top of the fold down table, in the tent trailer. Brian had checked on him maybe 10 - 15 minutes before and he was fine, sleeping and when Brian shut the door he must have woken a bit but didn't make noise.
About 10-15 minutes later we were all sitting in the living room talking and we heard Tika barking so Brian went outside to yell at her to stop barking. He decided he would check on Brady again. When he got to the trailer Brady was gone. He came in to the house to tell us Brady wasn't in the trailer and I remember leaving the house and running barefoot to the trailer screaming his name.

It was only a matter of seconds when Tika lead Brian to the lake and to the exact spot that Brady was in the water. Brian ound Brady floating face down in the water on the far side of the boat. Brian screamed that he was there and hopped in to save him. I just collapsed and screamed! I remember telling Steph to call 911 but all I remember is not being able to move and screaming.

Gary and Brian did CPR on Brady on the dock and within 5 breaths he was breathing on his own but had inhaled lots of lake water. The stars aligned because the Telkwa Fire Dept was out doing a course with Walter Boucher and were there within minutes, the ambulance was on their way back to Houston and was there within 6 minutes and on the way I asked that Dr Moisey be called (the local pediatrician) and he got there right after we arrived.

Brady was coming to but had a breathing tube so they sedated him and prepared him to come to Vancouver. We were on the medi-vac jet by 4pm and in Vanouver in 40 minutes! The team was amazing at keeping me informed and as calm as a mother could be.

When I got to the hospital Carrie was here within minutes of my arrival and Jodi showed up about 15 minutes later. That was why I wanted to come to Vancouver instead of Edmonton was because I knew we had a support system here.

Brady is now in the ward rather than the ICU which is great news, we'll be leaving tomorrow hopefully and Brian should be here in a few hours.
We owe Brady's life to Tika for alerting us, Brian, Gary, Steph and all the first responders, paramedics, dr's, nurses, infant transport team and all the prayers from everyone. The stars once again aligned for this little man and we can't possibly express how thankful we are!

Gary and Steph later traced Brady's route to the lake and if you look at my pictures from last year there are some of their house. He went from the back side of their house, around the house, all the way across all the grass, across the rocks, down the dock and climbed in to the boat. When he went to get out of the boat he got out on the wrong side of the boat which was where Brian and Tika found him. If it hadn't have been for Tika barking and leading Brian to the water Brady wouldn't be here today. What an amazing thing for a 4 month old puppy to do!
